Exporting Cars to New Zealand

If you are migrating to New Zealand it’s likely that you want your vehicle to come with you, or maybe you are a native who wants to export used cars to New Zealand for business or domestic reasons. There are four steps to the importing process, which are:

●     Determining the needs for your vehicle importation

●     Find evidence that your vehicle meets import criteria

●     Preparation of your vehicle for import

●     Finally, importing your vehicle

Inline with the New Zealand authorities, your vehicle will need to pass through a customs and bio-security check, prior to its arrival.

If you want to export used cars to New Zealandon a temporary basis - which means for up to 12 months, and no longer - then the vehicle will not have to complete the standard certification for permanent importation. It can continue to display its existing plates and there won’t be any importation taxes.

For temporary export into NZ, the requirements are:

●     The vehicle must be licensed in its native country

●     Signed to the Visitors Licence register

●     Pass the New Zealand WoF - Warrant of Fitness

●     Have the WoF sticker placed on its windscreen

You also need to be a permanent resident of the country that the vehicle is listed in and there will be a fee to pay upon arrival to New Zealand named the ACC, which is the Accident Compensation Corporation premium. This is to cover you if you do have a road traffic accident.
